yeah i am a little confused, but a petard is a small bomb used by french forces to blow up fortifications during the 16th century, lunte is the fuse and krudt is the gunpowder.

There's an old saying, "Hoist by your own Petard", it meant to get fucked over by something you started.
Like throwing a grenade only for the intended victim to throw it back and kill you.
So they had this job where this guy had to run up to the gates of the castle with a "Petard", a wall or door breaching bomb and blow a hole in it, only the fuse couldn't be very long otherwise the people inside the castle would just pour water over it, so they kept them short, and sometimes, the Petardiere would get blown up by the bomb he lit.
Hence, "getting hoist by your own Petard" !
The shit I know even astounds me, sometimes.
