If they are under $50 and a single item you normally get away with it. Anything more than that and it gets a bit risky. One pair normally flies under the radar (usually...)

USPS generally gets through the customs net ok

If you ask the seller to write GIFT on them or the airmail ticket then they should breeze through customs.

^ That's good for ebay etc, but quite often stores won't do that for you though, I know at least a couple of the ones I have used have gone as far as to expressly writing that they won't, in their shipping information.

I just ordered 2 pairs from Shiekh Shoes and paid only $25 postage all up. They arrived here in Australia within 2 working days. Not bad. I'm still waiting on a pair I ordered from Sportie LA over 2 weeks ago, which I paid $45 postage for.
ok, thx guys, sounds promising although I guess the gift trick is an old hat and doesn´t work anymore..

don't get charged customs fees on anything valued under $1000 AUD.
