with out wanting to sound massively ignorant... whats the plastic dip?.. im guessing some kinda heated rubber/plastic that you dip your sneaks into?

The metal, usually in rod form, is heated in an oven until it is hot, then dipped into a container of plastic powder, which is blown with air in order to create an even spread. The plastic melts onto the metal and sticks to it. The coated metal is put back into the oven until the plastic becomes smooth and shiny, then removed and left to cool.

OK, finally, there may be a solution to the problem of old faded shells. I have yet to get round to testing this yet (have bought some but not tried it yet) but it sounds like it may do the job. The paint dries to form a flexible weather-proof plastic/rubbery layer, whichs sounds like it would be perfect for painting shells.
As you know, you use normal paints and you risk it splitting or cracking when the ruber bends. This may solve that problem.
Once I have tested this out (if the weather stays good I can do it, as it needs to be used outdoors) I will let you all know the results.
They do it in several colours as well, so you may be able to take your customisation all the way down to the sole!

I think the idea was to apply it to the sides of the sole with a brush or air brush.
Checked out some other forums and it seems there is no solution to this sole issue, most people seem to use marker pens for the sole. I'll give up I think.

I know I sound a bit too enthusiastic about wanting to nail this customising lark, but it is addictive and the results are much more unique than mi adidas or nike id made shoes (even if they are not perfect!). Plus it feels like 'Hip Hop', like back in the day, representing yourself, your skills and creativity...it is lo-cost and inspired like nicking your mums kitchen lino and a sharp cassette deck and breaking in your anorak.

yeah.... but would it not be easier to buy some supes that had the sole that you wanted and then customise the rest.. the upper can be customised a hell of a lot easier.. what one are you in that pic?

Mate, I know you must know the 'Rock Steady Crew'. We were just trying to keep up by wearing ski goggles and racoon tails.
I try not to buy new sneakers to customise, recycle!
