i read somewhere that this was the shoe that you got issued if you got locked up in the great state in California - ie prison wear
is this true cos that might explain why it became super popular in the 'HOOD'
sort of like a badge of honour after leaving the pen etc . . .
it would be cool if it was true

No mate they were issued the most basic of Adidas Superstars when they were locked up

I've discovered this is in fact true.
I'm not sure if it was the superstar or promodel but they were issued to new inmates in US jails in the 70's/80's including Alcatraz.
And if that's not amazing product placement then I'm a monkey.

It'd be crazy to find a pair of 'convict SS' though, those would be some kicks with a story - you might even find a knife fashioned crudely out of a toothbrush stashed in the sole...
