OK, so here it is. I am set to re-enlist in the Marine Corps this week. I have been thinking about this for a long time. I have consulted my Chaplain, my family, my fiancee, my friends, random strangers at my local watering hole (drunk and sober), etc, etc. It seems to be a general consensus that America is running around like the fat bully kid in third grade. I don't think that I am fighting for freedom or the American dream any more. I am now extending myself to you, the SSDB members. Yes I am soliciting your opinions. I am rarely offended, so shoot from the hip.
What do you think: Is America out of control? Should I Re-enlist?
This should be interesting....

I'm no expert by any means but "the fat bully kid in third grage" sums it up rather well, don't Re-enlist.

Whenever I make life changing decisions I like to enlist the opinions of random internet forum members that I don't really know.
That being said... given the current world climate, you probably never should have enlisted. I'm just saying.

Might surprise a few here but never mind.
If you were still being stationed in Iraq I'd have said, fuck it, no way.
But unfortunately the shit that goes down in Afghanistan is something entirely different.
Many people wouldn't be able to pull the trigger and take another person's life, no matter how unsavoury that person was.
You though, I'm assuming, can.
We need people like you in Afghanistan cos if left untouched, Afghanistan could become a problem for every democratic thinking person in the world.
They happily entertain terrorist training camps, observe strict sharia law and are generally not the sort of people you want to turn up to your barbeque !
They need to be wiped off the face of the earth and if I could, I'd happily help.

I'm with P, one of the sales guys here did a 6 month tour of Afghanistan last year and some of the stories he tells are amazing, so suit up, boot up and get back out there!!
Seriously though the reasons that the governments give for going to war rarely hold weight, but the reason most guys (or women) join the army is to go to war and be involved (only you know if you want to be involved).
Fighting for Freedom or fighing for the dream...who gives a sh*t, if you wanna go......go.
Best of luck if you do

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the whole army thing but I'm guessing your decision to enlist and now re-enlist isn't really about whether it's the "right" thing to do (can't honestly believe anyone signs up to shoot people and believe it's morally righteous) but because it's a job with stable pay that isn't too hard to get.
If you're happy with killing people and you don't have any preferrable options in the civilian world then go for it. If you think you can get a decent job elsewhere that you'll enjoy as much as being a marine then do that instead. Go for whichever will provide the greatest quality of life for you. Personally I don't see what America's foreign policy has to do with enlisting (unless you're one of those chaps who joins the army and then whines at getting shot at).

You could join the TA, Pure.
They'd have you out there within six months!

Fuck that FC.
If I had a mind to I'd join up with a PMC and go look after some of the private companies out there.
It certainly pays better !
Maybe you should do that Marine ?!?

From a UK pov I'm slightly concerned that Afganistan is turning into our Vietnam, however given the fact that the taliban want the whole world under sharia law then its easy to see why many do choose to fight.
Either way it will cost soldiers lives, but thats war, its shitty.
I have top respect for those that do go and fight.
Your call Marine. Good luck either way.

Thank you all for your responses. I appreciate all of your comments. After careful consideration, I have decided not to re-enlist. The Marine Corps is not the same as it was when I joined. It's definitely not the same Corps that these older Marines have described to me from years past. I do love the Marine Corps, but it's a different beast these days. I am here in readiness if my Corps ever calls on me, but I feel it's best for me to wander for a while....
