I have to say I have mixed emotions about Obama becoming the president. On one hand, I'm glad I was around to witness such an historic event, America's first black president. For all it's faults and shortcomings, you've just got to be full of admiration for their progression. They were a country where only 40-50 years ago the notion of a non-white president was simply inconcievable. I couldn't see the general population of the UK voting for a non-white PM anytime soon.

On the other hand, I feel that the current (and previous) administration has handed him such a poisened chalice that his failure is pretty much guaranteed. There's no way the US's problems can be sorted in one term and his detractors will simply turn around and say "see, we told you black people cannot run a country properly" then we'll never see another black president for the next 200 years. I really do hope I'm wrong on this though!

I really believe he'll make a difference but as i said before i think the change for the better and influence on america in a positive way will come from something tragic.Just as martin luther kings passing changed america for the better i think the same will happen with obama.
I also don't think americans are that dumb or smallminded to believe the colour of someones skin in anyway effects how they run the country and will not persecute the next black candidate who runs for office.

I hear what your saying Shellshock. The weight of expectation on Obama's shoulders is immense. A lot of people may be expecting miracles, his election in itself is just short of a miracle when as you say 40 years or so ago black people struggled for the right to even vote. I personally think this will have a positive impact on world affairs, and yes in one term it will be difficult to achieve.

Pokey i hear you too man and i fear the same thing, i hope Obama can have a legacy like King's without the tragic outcome of having to become a martyr. This event shows that alot of American people are ready to look beyond skin colour, and judge future candidates on merit.
Someone asked me the other day 'How can a black man run a white country?' I told them what i see is an American running America.
