Google's gone all dark on us n'all.
I'm all for protecting the environment, but this earth hour seems to have missed the point.
I'll turn everything off when I got to bed.

Quote:Earth Hour 2007 was a Sydney event. Earth Hour 2008 is a global movement.
Created to take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming.
About Earth Hour
On March 31 2007, for one hour, Sydney made a powerful statement about the greatest contributor to global warming – coal-fired electricity – by turning off its lights. Over 2.2 million Sydney residents and over 2,100 businesses switched off, leading to a 10.2% energy reduction across the city. What began as one city taking a stand against global warming caught the attention of the world.
In 2008, 24 global cities will participate in Earth Hour at 8pm on March 29. Earth Hour is the highlight of a major campaign to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to take the simple steps needed to cut their emissions on an ongoing basis. It is about simple changes that will collectively make a difference – from businesses turning off their lights when their offices are empty, to households turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby.

Fkng hell, sort yourselves out! It's not a big commitment. It's to raise awareness about how much energy we needlessly use. It's done and over with now, but still worth learning about

It's more an awareness thing than a power saving thing. They talleyed the 'power saved' last year in Sydney and published the results - people are supposed to think "wow, and all I did was turn off acouple of lights!!". It's designed to make people think that all the little things, like turning off unneeded appliances/lights etc make a difference overall.
We did it in Christchurch on Saturday night and power usage was down 12.8% - turned off everything in the house cept for the telly. Wasn't really a big thing for us though, I'm pretty keen to turn off things that aren't needed cos it means we pay less on our powerbill. Most people in our area did it, but I was talking to my olds yesterday and they took the hour to go for a walk and said that pretty much nobody did it round where they live.
