Yep its a nightmare, I've been lucky and on the pairs i've had from the US, I didn't get charged anything, just came through US Postal Service / Royal Mail. Seems FedEx is the problem. Girlfreind is awaiting some Ugg boots arriving by FedEx told her to prepare for charges. Robbing @rseholes!
How much are you looking at Pokey?

These are customs and Customs clearance and brokerage fees guys...
FedEx is not the problem. Customs in your country charges the VAT & D&T... FedEx actually fronts the charge (rather than places them on hold until you come down to pay the fee in person) and then recoup the charges with you. There is definitely a customs clearance fee involved. This pays for the time and labour that goes into getting this through customs in your country. FedEx will also eat any D&T charges under $5 because it's not worth the time and effort to try and recoup this money.
I'll be more than happy to help answer any questions at all on questions you have.
I'm a Corporate Sales Prefessional for FedEx in Los Angeles area. It's my business and I'm glad to offer assistance and clarifcation for any questions... after all, we're in it for the love of Supe's!
Just keep in mind, When it comes to International shipping... The Government always needs their cream. Try shipping a Laptop computer into brazil some time if you REALLY want to see some taxes. 350% VAT!

I think what they are saying is with most carriers you stand a chance of items slipping through uncharged.....particularly if they are cheap and marked as a gift.
With FedEx you will always be charged customs, and the annoying thing is they invoice you a considerable amount of time after you have received the goods (so you think you have got away with it and order some more!).

Shotta is right on the mark.
I wouldn't say with most carriers you stand a chance of it slipping through, but with the post office you definitely stand a very good chance of avoiding VAT, D&T & brokerage fees.
It's always best to have the shipper indicate it is a "Gift" and to marks a Commodity customs value of under $9... $1 is best. Even with FedEx you'll get away with paying nothing if they do this for you.
On a side note, If you refuse to pay the FedEx invoice for D&T... there is no recourse. The charges will revert back to the shipper.

Fingers crossed my ZX700's get through OK, I just won them on ebay last night from designerathletic.
I highlighted on the checkout to actually record the price I paid for the sneakers, $34.99 or £16.95, so hopefully they should come through alright, as it's just below the £18 limit!
Watch this space.....

Just remember delivery times are lengthened considerably in December with the massive increase in parcels for Xmas. If they are coming through Parcelforce do not be surprised if they are severely delayed, a pair I was waiting on last December were over three weeks late, had to collect from Parcelforce depot which was a warzone of disgruntled customers and huge queues. Nightmare!! Still didnt get charged the taxes, so at least that was something.

Been tracking my yodas and according to US postal service website they have attempted to deliver them today but according to parcelforce website they are being held awaiting payment of charges does this mean they will send a letter for payment of charges before delivering my soups?
Cheers for any help
Have tried to ring parcel force but had more success banging my head against a brick wall

Yes they'll send you a letter.
You could try printing off the tracking info and going to the parcelforce office.. I did that before and it seemed to work.
