My boomboxes... -

Well I usually don't need any encouragement to bore people silly about boomboxes, but seeing as
four of you have asked, here goes...
First the headliner & the reason I got into the boombox thing. The JVC RC-M90 (on the right):
I wanted one because it's on the cover of LL Cool J's classic old skool hip hop album "Radio", & then discovered it's the most sought-after boombox of the lot. Decent ones routinely fetch up to US$2000 on eBay.
On the left is it's spiritual successor the JVC Kaboom. These are still on sale & it's the loudest boombox on sale today by a wide margin. Truly amazing bass for a portable.
Then I restored my old Hitachi Super Woofer... back in the day & it went
everywhere with me:
These Hitachis are much cheaper, so I decided to try & collect them all. I'm not doing too bad as it goes:
...Sooper, can you see your SuperWoofer here at all?
I also decided to get all the boomboxes I've ever owned. I had some Philips ones in the 80s, 'cos they were cheaper most (terminally skint, me):
Finally, I've got a soft spot for mini boomers - quality ones crammed with toys, like these:
This Sony cost a fortune back then.
I make sure they all keep working & currently have at least 8 in use around the house. I like my music...

OMG you are a proper head case (in a good way), that is amazing. When you said you collected them I didn't really picture in my mind that you'd have so many and they'd all be in such great condition!!
Good on you mate, I had a 3D Woofer back in the day and it's really cool to see them again.

Yeah amazing stuff man!!
I'll never forget the day my mum gave mine away to charity, it wasnt fully functional but I was f*cking pissed off
I'd love to replace it, would you recommend just watching eBay or can you recommend any alternative places to pick them up?

Thanks for the comments
Most people think I am more than a bit nuts over the boomboxes, but believe me, I'm quite the ameteur compared to some. It's a hobby that can get
seriously out of control.

eBay is a good place to look - most of my stuff is from there.
If you give me some more info on it (make & model number if you know it, or failing that a description), I'll ask around the boombox collectors I know - see if we can't turn one up for you.

Hmm. Might be able to help you there. Give me as much detail as you can about how the JVC looked & what features it had. What did you mean by "3 deck"?

Being born in 1990 boomboxes are one of those things I grew up idolizing but they all dissapeared by the time I was old enough to have one (cash and being able to carry it
)
Stunning collection mate - I'm always amazed when I see somebodys collection of something, you somehow never expect the sheer volume whatever it is they collect

That is brilliant fella!! I had no idea that they had made so many different SuperWoofers! I had seen a few models before mine but i had no idea there were so many styles!!
I think mine is in the pic of Woofers you have taken on the stairs , i think it is the second one down from the top, its hard to be 100% sure.
When i get to work tomorrow i will take a pic and post it sometime. I got mine for an 18th present from my Dad so a very long time ago!
Awesome collection mate, top notch!
Just found an old partial pic of it

Nice one, it was a JVC (I think) but long like the Hitachi there but with twin tape decks. Was white/chrome and probably quite a shit one comparatively, but I loved it and owe it a lot
PS Have they all got batteries in?!

Hell, no! most take 8 D cells each - whose got that sort of money?

ah yeah, that's the attitude
the boombox forum I'm on is full of people who remember that boombox feeling. The things some boomboxes have seen, eh?
Right let's see. Can you tell me anymore about it? was it big or quite slim, did it have 2 speakers or any extra ones for bass, etc. Did it have anything written on it that you remember like "hyperbass" or anything, did it have a CD player, did the speakers come off, did it have round edges or sharp corners?
Anyway, here's my best guess so far, the JVC RC-W3:
-------------------
Sooper Wrote:...Just found an old partial pic of it
Good to see a 3D in it's intended environment - blasting hard surrounded by beers. Nice dodgy looking stain on the carpet too
Anyway, that's a Hitachi 3D80. They come up fairly regularly on eBay UK (don't bother internationally - the shipping will be a killer), & go for sensible money mostly. It's a good boombox - plenty of toys & damn loud for the size. Sure it's not hifi, but that was never the point of these, was it?
There's one on eBay Canada now if you want some more pics:
